A balance must be struck between looking on the bright side and being pragmatic, between thinking positively and acknowledging the reality of a situation.

Usually, our thought and emotion's level of positivity match, so when we're feeling negative, we're likely to be thinking negative things and when we're feeling positive, we're likely to be thinking positive things. But we each have the ability to consciously choose what to think, although it seem
